Understanding shifting container capacities and ocean shipping lanes at India's largest private port.
Ahmedabad Command operations Insights
Mundra Port, situated on the north shores of the Gulf of Kutch in Gujarat, continues to expand its role as India's primary maritime gateway. With the completion of new container terminal extensions, the port's total handling capacity has expanded by an additional 1.2 million TEUs annually. For businesses shipping goods out of Gujarat's primary manufacturing hubs, this expansion brings significant adjustments to ocean logistics.
The primary benefit of this capacity increase is a reduction in vessel turn-around times. Previously, seasonal cargo rushes caused container yards to experience stack congestion, leading to drayage delays and delayed customs clearances. The newly automated handling systems and extended container berths now enable shipping lines to dock and discharge cargo with minimal anchor wait times.
Additionally, the port's railway links have been upgraded. Direct double-stack container train lines now connect Mundra directly to the Inland Container Depots (ICDs) in Ahmedabad and Sanand. This makes multi-modal rail-to-sea transport much more cost-effective for inland exporters, bypassing the need for long-distance highway hauling.
To leverage these updates effectively, exporters should coordinate with their clearing agents to secure empty container allocations early. As vessel sizes docking at Mundra scale up, securing priority space on major direct liners will prevent shipping delays during peak export quarters.
